Summary:

Many men and women have been dying in an immigration jail and for years they didn’t have any records regarding these people. Many people are being held in the immigration jails until they’re tried to be deported. The medical conditions are not very good causing many people to die of illness. Many people consider these jails as the “last resort”. It can house 1,503 people at a time. The place has been questioned many times but there are no facts proving that the death of the immigrants have anything to do with the jail.

Relation to Social Studies:

We talked about how the conditions in the factories weren’t so great for the immigrants. The immigrants in this jail don’t really good conditions either. Immigrants still aren’t being treated the way they should be. In the sweatshops people were often abused and hurt. The people in the jail are dying because of the bad conditions.

Discussion questions:

1.    What is the jail used for?

2.    Do you think the conditions in the jail are fair? If so, why and if not what can they do to make it better?

3.     Do you think that the immigrants should have to live in this jail?

Answer to the discussion question

1.    The jail is used for immigrants who are waiting to be tried

2.    I don’t think the conditions in the jail are fair. I think they need to get better medical help and cleaner areas for them to live.

3.    No I don’t think the immigrants should have to live in the jail. They disserve better

1) I think the jail was used to keep immigrants under surveillance until they are tried.

2) The conditions in the jail are not fair at all. They should be considerate and sanitize the jail including the jail cells, which will theoretically reduce diseases starting and spreading. Even if this jail is used as a last resort, it still should fit the standards of a normal jail.

3) I think that immigrants should be kept in some place where they can be monitored because chances are that they might run away. However, I don't think the immigrants should be housed in a jail, but more of like a hotel because of the horrible conditions faced.

1) The jail is used for immigrants that are waiting to be tried for deportation.
2) The conditions in the jail are too crowded(1,503 people all together), in which a disease or illness could easily spread.
3) Yes, I agree with Gwenny that immigrants deserve better. They came to America seeking opportunity, and officials jailing and penalizing them for it is just a shame.
