Tensions Mount in Devastated Capital as Nations Step Up Aid Pledges to Haiti

by Marc Lacey - Quinn Ricketts

Summary

Early this week tremors shocked the unprepared city of Port-Au-Prince. the Earthquake stood at a 7.00 on the rictor scale so far 50,000 people have been reported dead. But president Obama rushed to the aid of Hait promising $100 million  in aid and sent 5,000 troops to haiti to help the effort. The UN said that they are preparing to send 6,000 reinforcements. However, many people are still trapped under tons of debris. Heart broken people tap on concrete, desperately dial phones, and dig hoping for any kind of response that can be heard or saw.  One man said that the earthquake was swift and devastating to the rebuilding of Haiti. A professor at Columbia's University was afraid for the kids because they die easier under weight that an adult can hold for much longer. The people that are trapped are almost out of time.

This article relates to social studies because we learned that the President is that commander and Chief of the military and Obama sent troops to help Haiti.

Discussion Questions:

     1) Do you Think that other countries should be offering more help?

     2) What do you think should be done to help out Haiti?

     3) Would you have handled the situation differently if you were Obama?

My answers:

I believe that more countries should have been as quick as the U.S. at offering relief.

I think people should donate money do help support the efforts.

If I was Obama I would have handled the situation just like he did because the people desperately need more help.

I think that other countries should offer more help so that the people of Haiti can get more relief from the earthquake, and also so that the U.S won't have to help all by themselves.
I think people should donate money or foos or clothes to help the people in need.
I would have sent troops and money as well, but also sent some doctors to help the people who are injured

1. Other countries will help Haiti and definitely the U.N will also. They will definitely will send in supplies, relief, medical care, etc.
2. Their will be looting so their should be a security force, rescue team, construction team, humanitarian people, etc.
3. If I was President Obama, I will take quick action in which I will send U.S forces over there, send more relief aid, ask other countries to help out, and finally wait for the effects of our plan to happen.

1: I think that other countries should help Haiti, if the country can afford it. Obviously most countries are more fortunate than Haiti so they will and must help.
2: I think they should be more food and medicine sent as soon as they can. Also more car rides to get to Dominican Republic.
3: I would have handled it almost the same except that I would send much more troops and medicine to help the people of Haiti.

1) I think that other countries should send in more help. Because president Obama prosmised $100 million to help Haiti, other countries should see that as an example of what they should do.
2) I believe that more medical supplies and food should be sent to help those who are trapped, and more rescue teams and equipment to free them.
3) If I were Obama in this situation, I would have reacted much in the same way. I would have sent in troops, medical supplies, food and water like he did, but i would have slightly educed the amount of money due to the current state of our economy.

other countries should be offering more the only problem is that some may not be able to afford.
the U.S. and any other countries should send medical supplies food and CLEAN water, they should also keep they the "mobs" of the young men with machetes under control.
I don't mean to sound like a left wing nut but i feel as if obama is doing well with the current situation

1. Yes I think more counties should offer more help. That includes sending troops to help the people and money to help rebuild everything.
2. I think that everyone and country should focus on giving money to help rebuild schools and offices, so kids keep getting their education and offices for people to work.
3. No I think everything Obama id was good by sending in the troops and the money. Maybe I would send sending more than $100 million.

no because amarica will send every penny it has and doesn't have (debt) to save to poor people of haiti and why can't we focas on our national debt instead, because if we keep on acting like this then we will become a third world country ourselves.
get china to send them job's or get amarica to hire them for our army that way they get citicinship for a non destroyed country and a job as well.
yes i would have done what i said in num two and i would also try to build a few high class schools to that the people can become smart get a good job and possibly make a company in amarica
