Summary:
Haitian and immigration advocates in South Florida are pressing the Obama administration to keep undocumented Haitians from being deported back to Haiti. They want to provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) which means they would have temporary legal immigration status in the U.S. The reason is to keep Haitians from being deported back to Haiti which is in a state of catastrophe following Tuesday’s earthquake. The groups are holding press conferences on Thursday to publicize the issue.
This highlights an immigration issue about what to do with people who have no place to return to and it would be inhumane to deport them back to their home country. This is an example of how some Florida officials and advocates want to help immigrants during a time of crisis. As we have discussed in class, there are times when immigrants are welcome more than at other times.
Questions:
1. Do you think the Obama administration will grant Temporary Protected Status to undocumented Haitians in the U.S.?
2. How do you think the American society will view and think about this topic?
3. Do you think we should deport undocumented Haitians back to Haiti at this time?
My Answers:
1. Yes, if enough of the public agrees with this proposal, then I think the Obama administration will be pushed to grant TPS to Haitians.
2. I think the majority of Americans will favor this because Americans have a lot of compassion when people are in crisis. They will most likely support this to help an impoverished nation in its time of need.
3. No, I do not think we should deport Haitians at this time because it is wrong to send somebody to somewhere that is in such a bad state it is basically impossible to survive.

1.) I believe that the Obama administration will grant TPS to undocumented Haitians. If they do not they will face the criticism of the national and international community. I believe that the majority of the American public thinks that this is the right way to go, and to deny that would be a fatal error on the President's part. Also, it just seems like the right thing to do.
2.) I think the American public will agree with this proposal. We have compassion for them and recognize the devastating situation they are in. It seems only fair and just to grant them temporary status.
3.) No, I don't think Haitians should be deported at this time. They are facing crisis, and it would be cruel to send them back to that awful situation. To send them back to that terrible crisis would be wrong and unjustified.

1) I think that the Obama administer will give Haitians TPS. To not do so would be inhumane.
2) Americans seem to be banding together to help Haiti. Far and wide, I hear of different attempts to mend what has happened. So, I think Americans will view it with sympathy and a longing to help.
3) No, we shouldn't. Why on Earth would anyone get sent back to a place that is struggling just to exist? That would be plain mean.
