Obama, Bush, Clinton 'stand' united for Haiti
Author: Joel Anthony
By: Adrian Tkaczuk
Summary: President Barack Obama and former presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush got together to speak for Haiti's devastating, 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Obama explained that during these tough times, America stands united for the victims of Haiti and will help them rebuild. The U.S. plans to launch "one of the largest relief efforts in our history" to aid Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas. George Bush acknowledges that it will be a challenge to recover the nation, but donations will help drastically. He believes Americans should contribute money to benefit Haiti relief organizations, who will then spend it effectively. Bill Clinton, the United Nations special envoy for Haiti, said the first priority would be to send food, water and medicine.
How it relates to class: This article to class because it depicts the unselfishness of the U.S. As history has shown, America has been one of the most contending nations in the world. We have battled human rights issues, war and like Haiti, natural disasters. Currently, we are fighting a troublesome economy and a high unemployment rate. Regardless, the U.S. pushes to make world peace, and realizes the significance of Haiti's earthquake disaster. People there are now living with starvation, poverty and without medical care.
Discussion Questions:
1) Do you believe the U.S. government will place a tax upon us in order to further aid Haiti? Why or why not?
2) Is this a good time to launch such a large relief effort for Haiti? Explain your reasoning.
3) Do you think the United States' objective of recovering Haiti from its demoralizing state will succeed in the end? Why or why not?
My Reponses:
1) No, I don't believe the U.S. government will wager a tax for its citizens in order to restore Haiti. My belief is that the government understands our sub-par economic status and will not plunge us into deeper into it.
2) Yes, I do think it's the right time to launch an impacting relief effort on Haiti. Casulties have hit thousands of people and many have already perished. We cannot wait on an important issue like this, or else the situation in Haiti will remain unchanged, due to poverty and lack of medical staff.
3) Yes, I do think the U.S. will be successful in bringing Haiti to its original state. Many articles and advertisements have been published all across America to raise awareness for Haiti. In addition, organizations are making statements persuading Americans to put forth money willingly for the people of Haiti.

I do not believe that the government will place taxes on us because we should not have to donate. I think that the majority of the people of the united states will donate, so there will be no need for taxes.
I do not think this is a good time to launch such a large relief effort for Haiti because there might be another aftershock, and that could cause more damage to the people we have helped, and the buildings we have repaired. I think we should wait just a little longer to sent more help.
i think the U.S will restore Haiti to its original state. We are helping a lot by sending in medical staff, and helping to reconstruct the damage the earthquake has done. Also, I think that many people will donate to help the tragic state of Haiti

I do not believe will even tax us because that is not our "country's problem". But they will still help.
Yes because one of the poorest countries will become chaos. And the people will be needed to maintain it.
If the U.S and other nations could keep the chaos in order and restore it properly, then yes. But otherwise we will see.

1) I believe that the government will not place a tax to fund Haiti because we are already donating much of our own pocket money to help relief efforts. Also we are such a generous and thoughtful country already, and if a tax is placed on us then we might stop donating money and just go with the tax.
2) I think that whenever there is a crises we should try and help out in any way possible. I don't believe that the economy has had an effect on the number of people who are donating just maybe a tiny bit on the amount, possible from a $20 donation to $15, thats all. Also there will always be a natural disaster threat, thats just where they are located, so i think its good that we are launching such a fast relief and rebuilding effort.
3) Yes the rebuilding efforts will succeed and return Haiti to it's original state again. America has endured many disasters, big and small, and from what I know we have rebounded on all of them making the properties even more spectacular. I have no doubt that we will fall short of any expectations.

1) I do not think that the government will place taxes on us just yet. I think they are expecting us to pitch in money just as a random act of kindness. If not enough people are pitching in I think that is when they will start placing the taxes.
2) I think that this is an appropriate time to launch something like this. America is such a strong country therefore we should help other countries that are in need. Haiti needs a support system at a time like this and America is perfect for that job.
3). I think that if the United States helps support Haiti and convinces other countries to pitch in Haiti could be rebuilt. It would take a lot of work but I think that we could do it.

1) I do not think that the government will put taxes on us because we should not be forced to help them. Many people are already donating and there will be enough money to provide help in Haiti. Also, the economy is already pretty bad and I don't think the government will attempt to make that worse.
2) I think this is a good time to launch a project like this. There were so many casualties and America is strong enough to support Haiti. If we wait on this situation, life in Haiti will only get worse.
3) I think that the U.S. will be able to rebuild Haiti. If many people pitch in, whether it is giving money or actually going to Haiti to help, Haiti will return to its previous state.

1) I believe the U.S. government will not place a tax upon us in order to further aid Haiti. Taxes have already been raised in many places and because of our financial crisis, adding another tax would make the economic problems even worse. The U.S. should just let people that are in a position to donate money do so.
2) I believe that this is a good time to launch a large relief effort. If the U.S. as well as other countries don't help, then there will be many problems. For right now, the thing they need most is food, supplies, water, and most of all medical professionals to help the injured. Once they are able to get those things fixed, then they can move on to rebuilding and getting Haiti back to a liveable country.
3) I believe that the United States' objective of recovering Haiti will succeed in the end. With the U.S. and many other countries helping, Haiti will be able to get back on it's feet. Many people have donated money as well as their time to help with various tasks and with all of that being done Haiti will be able to return to how it was.
