Afghan army raises flag on embattled Taliban town
Authors: Alfred de Montesquiou & Rahim Faiez
By: Adrian Tkaczuk
Summary: An Afghan flag was raised by a soldier in the town of Marjah, despite the recent terror inflicted by the Taliban. Roughly 15,000 NATO(The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and Afghan troops are stationed at Marjah, a town of about 80,000 people. As Marjah is still recovering from its bombings and invasions of the Taliban, the Afghan army and NATO are on the offensive to protect the dying nation. Forty insurgents have been killed since the operation was launched, along with 15 confirmed civilian deaths. The U.S Marines have already pushed through opium fields, barren land and side alleys to take control of Taliban areas in Afghanistan. They're also attempting to disarm bombs planted by the Taliban, which are mostly nearby government buildings. Life is slowly returning to normal, with shops opening up and people continuing with their daily lives. Frank Ruggierom, the representative for Southern Afghanistan, said that the U.S instituted a $10 million aid program that is used for all of southern Afghanistan.
How it Relates to class: This article relates to class because it shows the U.S once again is acting as a world power. Not only is the U.S the protector of the western hemispere, but the U.S also wants to establish world peace in Europe. Afghanistan is one of many countries in Europe who are experiencing hardships and war. The U.S believes with the help of NATO and Afghan troops, they can save Afghanistan from the corrupt group known as the Taliban.
Discussion Questions:
1) Is it smart for the U.S to pour in $10 million into southern Afghanistan? Explain.
2) Should the U.S target the idea of eliminating the Taliban, or to just fix Afghanistan overall as a nation? Neither? Explain your reasoning.
3) Do you think the U.S will prevail in their relief efforts for Afghanistan? Why or why not?
My Responses:
1) I believe the U.S shouldn't used $10 million specifically for southern Afghanistan, but to spread out the money. We can't allow just one area to be aided, as others in Afghanistan are suffering as well. The welfare should be broadened to more parts in Afghanistan.
2) I think the U.S should focus on fixing Afghanistan as a whole, as it's in an economic depression and the living conditions are poor. The Taliban are sparsely divided, and they're not only located in Afghanistan. Eliminating the group would be unrealistic and time consuming. Afghanistan should be aided instead of chasing the outlaws who are interfering.
3) I predict that the U.S will succeed in bringing Afghanistan to a healthy state. Their movements so far have been successful, and I believe they will continue to be. Teaming up with the Afghan army will assist the U.S in controlling areas of Afghanistan. The Taliban in few years will probably diminish in Afghanistan, which will make life easier and less intimidating for its citizens.

1. I think that the U.S. should not pour one cent into Afghanistan. As history shows, most foreign conflicts in which we have taken sides have turned against us. example, osama bin laden was trained and aided by our great nation, no he is probably top of the FBI's ten most wanted list.
2. I think that the U.S. should target the idea of KEEPING OUT NOSES OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES' BUSINESS WHEN IT DOES NOT CONCERN US AND LET THEM WORK IT OUT! We may be fighting for what we believe in, but nothing is getting done and people are dying. Sure it seems unfair to stand by and watch but there is not anything that realistically do about it right now.
3. No I do not think that our efforts will succeed in their efforts. we can send troops and money, but how can we assure that it will do what we want it to.

1. 10 million dollars is nothing in the United States military budget. But since this war is dragging really slowly, it depends on what they are spending on. I believe this investment is pointless because in the past years, there was barely any progress so what is the point of handing out extra cash?
2. The U.S should just focus fixing Afghanistan as a whole. If we risk losing Afghanistan, chaos will erupt from any point of view from diplomatic, economic, political, etc.
3. It depends on the situation. If it is really working, then yes the relief effort will work but slowly.

1. I believe what the U.S. did is pointless. That money is not enough to make a significant mark to help Afghanistan but it might do some good because Afghanistan needs all the help it can get.
2. Well I think that if you want to fix Afghanistan you need to eliminate the Taliban. The Taliban is the dominate power in the country and with that power they are destroying Afghanistan. If you eliminate the Taliban all the bad and destructive influences in Afghanistan will be gone.
3. I think if the U.S. invests enough effort they will be able to fix Afghanistan. It will take a very long time and will take a lot of steps to get there but if the U.S. really cares about the issues in Afghanistan then they will be able to fix it.
