Summary:

The U.S senate has approved to extend a measure to extend help to the unemployed along with business tax breaks by a partisan vote of 62-36 with one democrat voting no and 6 rebluicans crossing the line and voting yes.  Now the measure goes to the house for approval.  Highlights of the measure include extending the unemployedment to 99 weeks, extending the government subsidy for paying COBRA health benifits to the unemployed along with some business tax break. The Democrats feel the measure is needed to help the unemployed however the Rebluicans feel that the measure is putting us into more debt and not creating jobs to end the recession.

Connection:

In class we learned about the Great Depression and how jobs we hard to come by and the Government tried to make jobs for the people to get us out of the recession.

Questions:

1.  Do you think that this measure will help us get out of the recession?  Why or why not?

2. Do you think unemployed people should be payed for 99 weeks if they don't have work or do you think it should be less of a time?

3.  How long do you think until we get out of the recession?  Why?

Answers:

1.  No, because for people that are unemployed they will just sit here and get the benifits and wait until the 99 weeks to find the job and that will hurt our Government and economy.

2.  I think that it should be about 20-25 weeks for the unemployed to find a job.

3.  I think it's going to be about a year to a year and a half before about almost everyone gets a job and the economy is up and running again because of all the help the Government is doing.

1. I do not think that this will get us out of the recession completely. It will help a bit with the unemployment but then the unemployed will wait the 99 weeks before finding another job.
2. I think it should be less time, about 15 weeks should be enough.
3. I think it will be a while until we get out of the recession. There is still a lot of unemployment and the economy is still not that great. People everyday are making efforts to make it better but I really don't know when it will be over.

1. I do not think this will get us out of the recession completely but it could really help out many unemployed people. It's a step in the positive direction.
2. I think it is much too long. It should be anywhere from 15-30 weeks with special exceptions.
3. I don't think we will be completely out of the recession for a few years but we will be back on our feet completely and be able to make more drastic changes in about a year to a year and a half.
