Unemployment rate rose to 12.2% for the state of Illinois for January. This is up from last year. People are losing jobs everyday in the metro Chicago area especially. The city lost 8,600 jobs. Illinois unemployment rate is above the national rate of 10.6 %. Unemployed people in Illinois are growing by the year.

We are studying the Great Depression. Especially, we are learning about how many people lost jobs and what we did to get back on our feet. This shows how even so many years later, we are still dealing with unemployment all over the country. We need to figure out a way to get this unemployment rate down because we can't continue having this many unemployed people in Illinois.

1.Why do you think unemployment went down especially in January?

2.Why do you think Illinois has a higher unemployment rate than most of the rest of the nation?

3.What do you think we could do to get unemployment rates back down?

1.              I think because of the new year, businesses had to make budget cuts for 2010. I think many people also only had one year left on their contacts which expired at the end of the year.

2.              I think Illinois has a higher unemployment rate because of Chicago especially. Chicago has major parts of which people can stay that are jobless. Many major businesses have had to make major cuts or were fully shut down.

3.              I think if we make more service projects like FDR did, we could really clean up the Chicagoland area and get people jobs. It will take time but it is necessary to get us back on our feet.

1. I think that the unemployment rate is so down in January because there are not as many construction jobs because we cannot do construction jobs in the winter as the summer.
2. One reason that unemployment might be so low in Illinois is because there are a lot of downtown areas where people aren't very educated and so they have trouble finding a job.
3. Some jobs that we might be able to create are ones that would help clean up parks in the city and maybe jobs to create more state parks.

1) I think people were let go mainly in January because, similar to what Jack said, businesses have to plan for the new year, and since they are trying to save money, lay-offs are a part of that.
2) I think Illinois is suffering so much because most of it isn't cities and urban area, and where they are big cities, big corporations are cutting back, making it hard to find jobs.
3) I think a combination of relief programs like FDR had and encouraing more localized, smaller businesses will help because those will widen the job spectrum and possibly give jobs to people who have been fired from jobs at big corporations.

1. I think that the unemployment went up in January because businesses were trying to get enough money to pull through the year.

2. I think illinois is suffering due to Chicago and it's unemployment rates. there are a lot of people in chicago so it has high unemployment rates like any other city. also, about 20.6% of Chicago's population lives in poverty.

3. I think that more industry needs to be reintroduced to Chicago and Gary to get the economy of the area back up and running.

1. New years resolution, and that was completely literal.
2. Because Illinois is one of the states that has the most to lose.
3. Cut down foreign expansion and pullout of the middle east.

1. I think that the reason more and more people are unemployed is because a lot of companies can't keep up with bills and have to fire people to make ends cut. Also everyone is worried that they might go out of a job and panic.
2. The reason that Illinois has a higher unemployment rate than other states is because we have larger cities like Chicago. In Chicago, the nation's third largest city, there are much more problems and people so more people are getting fired.
3. The way that I think we can get unemployment rates up is to either protest the government to not spend so much money on technology or start helpful new organizations like Roosevelt did.

1) I agree with both Jack and Elizabeth. Companies need to plan things out for the new year and are not hiring right away. Also, construction jobs, and many other jobs are put on hold during the winter.
2) I think that Chicago is not doing that well so the whole state is effected. Some Chicago factories are cutting back and so jobs are lost. Since Chicago is a large city, there are also a lot of homeless and jobless people looking for jobs. Since many companies aren't hiring, Chicago's unemployment rate goes down.
3) I think that more public work jobs should be added. Chicago is a big city and that means a lot of trash. People should employ people to help the city go green and clean up trash.

1. I think since it was the start of the new year, alot of companies started letting people go. I also agree with Elizabeth and what she said about the construction jobs.
2. I think that Illinois isnt doing so well is because like everyone else said many people in the city are suffering and in the more rural areas. I think because of this, the state is being affected.
3. I agree with Molly. That we should give out more public works jobs. The city can be very messy, so they could hire people to clean up the streets.

1. Well their is nothing special in January because winter is like a dead zone because nothing is really happening.
2. Well we do not excel at something we do. Like Detroit with their car manufacturing. If we do well in something, maybe we will have a lower unemployment rate.
3. Well again help the people. In order to make money, you got to spend money. In which case build pro business laws that help people to make money so they could buy things, therefore bring the economy back up.

1. I think that the unemployment went up in January because business at the end of the year was in debt so they decided to fired some people so they didn’t have to spend the money paying for people and they would be in the green for their budget.
2. I think Illionios has a high unemployment rate because of all the business around like in Chicago and the business don’t need that many workers.
3. I think we could create more jobs and branches of businesses.

1. I think that the unemployment went up because it was a new year and like others have said, there are jobs that really can't be done in the winter. Also, it is after Chirstmas and if the store did really well then, they could have overproduced and no one bought anything in January.
2. I think that the high unemployment rate is because of all the large companies in the big cities. Illinois has Chicago, a very large city, but also rural areas. If the city is having unemployment issues than so will the farms.
3. Being in an area thats highly populated and has a lake near by, like others have said, I think public works jobs can help with this problem. The city is dirty and once summer comes, everyone will be at the beach and that will soon become dirty as well.

1. I think the unemployment rate went down because of the new year.
2. I think the unemployment has to do mostly with the city of Chicago.
3. Well we need to find ways like FDR did to get those unemployed rates to go down.

1. I believe that unemployment is down because companies have to make budget cuts for the New Year to start making better profits in 2010. A big part of those budget cuts is a lot of firings resulting in the current unemployment.
2. I believe it’s affecting Illinois a lot because it has such a big city within it, Chicago, and because of that population there are a lot of people that all live in an economically challenging time and with that comes a lot of unemployment.
3. I think we need to have programs similar to the ones in the new deal that create jobs for the unemployed. Like construction and even things like the CCC that
