SUMMARY
The huge healthcare bill known as the "greatest deliberative body in the world" is likely going to make the Senate work through their typical Christmas Recess this year. The goal, according to President Obama is to pass this bill by christmas. The republicans, obviously, are opposing the bill and are trying their hardest to prevent the bill from being passed. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is prepared for the debate to go over into at least part of recess. The debate has gotten to the point where one of the Senators has shipped a tree to Washington. This isn't the first time working into recess has happened. In the 1800's, there was an efficient enough form of transportation to take very much time off. They mostly only took Christmas Day off. Other than that, there have only been 5 years where Christmas Recess was skipped.
RELATION TO CLASS
This relates to class because we were studying legislation and the Senate. We discussed that bill could be thrown out because it has taken too long in Congress. Furthermore, we learned the Senate can’t be out of session for longer than 3 days without approval from the other house.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- How would you feel if you had to be in school during winter break or during the holidays do to the fact there was still a good amount of work to do?
- How do you feel about the potential reform in health care?
- If the health care bill is passed, how will it affect you?
MY ANSWERS
- I really wouldn’t mind the fact I wouldn’t be able to celebrate the holidays with my family because they really aren’t that important to me (the holidays, not my family). What I do care about is that I don’t get to take time off of school. Every year I look forward to 2 full weeks off of school. If that is taken away from me to do more work, then I would be extremely disappointed and upset.
- I really think, if the law is passed, it will help a substantial amount of people who aren’t fortunate enough to have health care. I don’t think people should die because they don’t have something as seemingly simple as healthcare.
- I already have heath care, so it wouldn’t affect me as much as someone who doesn’t. I would, however, affect my parent because they would likely have to pay higher taxes.

1. If there was work to do, I wouldn't mind sacrificing 2 weeks of boredom and screen time to finish it.
2. if the law is passed, millions who cannot afford something as basic as healthcare will be helped and saved so I have no objection to it.
3. I have healthcare already so this will have no affect on me as a person but in response to higher taxes, well, I'd rather see billions in tax money go to healthcare rather than the death-squads and oppressive military juntas in foreign countries that we usually fund so that they will do our dirty work.
